First Federal Agency to Implement EPM 2007

Goal

Improve the OCC's ability to manage IT projects and improve communications, collaboration and control of projects by combining Microsoft Office Enterprise Project Management (EPM) 2007 with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007.

Challenges

The OCC had suffered from inconsistent project delivery results and an inability to provide timely data to executives charged with making IT portfolio management decisions.

Unacceptable schedule and budgetary variances had forced the OCC to re-examine its project management practices and begin to modernize its project management process, procedures and tool suite

Cognitive Technologies and SI had previously established a scalable project management methodology that had been rolled out across the OCC and its PMOs.

Solution

To achieve the OCC CIO's vision of doing the ‘business of project management' in a consistent way by using a standard tool that enables executive dashboard reporting to monitor and ensure IT project progress and accountability, Cognitive Technologies architected a project management solution in 90 days using a suite of applications from Microsoft:

  • Microsoft 007
  • Project Web Access
  • Microsoft Project Server
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000
  • Windows SharePoint

Cognitive specialists:

  • Architected a project management solution in 90 days using a suite of applications from Microsoft
  • Integrated EPM 2007 and MOSS 2007 with a common sense approach to project management to integrate existing practices and industry best practices based on project size and scope
  • Provided both the technical integration and cognitive (human factors) expertise required to ensure the adoption of the tool suite

Cognitive Value Added

Cognitive Technologies provided a team of experienced project managers, business analysts, PMO directors, and cognitive specialists to support the OCC to:

  • Achieve consistency in project management across the enterprise
  • Enable executives to monitor and control multiple projects easily and hold teams accountable for success
  • Enable quicker access to project documentation
  • Improve forecasting as a result of the Global Resource pool
