User-centered Requirements for AMF Bowling Rental System

Goal

Create requirements that can be used to develop an easy-to-use rental/check out system that will enable bowling alley personnel to quickly check out, check in, and determine status of rental equipment.

Challenges

  • Target system users were not well educated nor necessarily computer literate
  • Considerable variance in personnel and equipment across all AMF bowling centers.

Solution

Cognitive's approach was to:

  • Elicit user scenarios on site, working with actual personnel, to understand the typical scenarios of use and how they are accomplished today
  • Document the scenarios of use and the preliminary requirements
  • Design a set of initial prototype screens that represent each of the major scenarios with graphics and preliminary screen layouts in order to bring preliminary requirements to life
  • Work with typical users to review the prototype screens, conduct walkthroughs, and refine the requirements for final documentation.

Cognitive Value Added

Cognitive Technologies provided expertise in user-centered requirements, scenario-based engineering, and human factors, as well as graphics support for the development of prototype screens in order to:

  • Profile the target user community and work with them to elicit initial requirements
  • Translate initial requirements into professional-looking prototype screens to enable the user community to more easily understand and review the requirements
  • Quickly craft a complete, accurate set of requirements.
